Chapter 8
1. How does Hem respond to Atticus's compliment about the snowman? What does this suggest about their relationship?
The compliment suggest that Atticus was happy and feels comforted. They are very close together.
2. What does the town's response to the fire at Miss Maudie's house reveal about Maycomb's universe of obligation in this chapter? A community's universe of obligation includes the circle of individuals and groups toward whom obligation are owed, to whom rules apply, and whose injuries call for amends. In other words, a community's universe of obligation consists of those its members believe are worthy of respect and protection.
It will be difficult as Maycomb is a very prejudiced area. They simply hate black people just because of their colour.
Chapter 9
1.What is Aunt Alexandra's vision for what is "lady-like"? How does Scout respond to that vision? What does Atticus think about Scout's conformity to gender role?
A lady-like person does not swear and wears dresses and skirts. However Scout does not care. Atticus does scold Scout from time to time for not being lady-like but he actually does not care.
2. What metaphor does Alexandra use to describe the role that Scout should play in her father's life because she is a girl? How does her repetition of the metaphor help establish her tone and indicate her feelings about Alexandra's attempt to influence her?
She is called 'lady-like' by Alexandra. Alexandra uses that phrase to force Scout to change and become a more gently and 'lady-like' person.
Chapter 10
1. What do we learn at the beginning of the Chapter 10 about the way that Scout and Jem feel about Atticus? How does Atticus's defense of Tom Robinson reinforce those feelings?
They think of him as a physically weak person but mentally strong. He thinks Tom is innocent but knows that nothing can be done to persuade an all white jury.
2. Atticus instructs Scout and Jem that "it's a sin to kill a mockingbird." What does this advice mean? Look for evidence in the text to help you explain.
Because Atticus stats "Mockingbirds don't do one thing but make music for us to enjoy...but sing their hearts out for us. That's why it's a sin to kill a mockingbird." This statement shows that mockingbird are creatures that in a way helps us thus we are not to kill them.
